Program Overview

Fashion Studies in Paris2
This spring semester course includes a 9-day study abroad experience in Paris and seminars at MSU, with readings and written
assignments. It will examine issues surrounding the historical and contemporary roles of Parisian fashion, with focus on French
heritage marketing, retailing, designers, and fashion exhibitions. The field trip is an integral part of the semester-long course.

Dr. Abby Lillethun, Associate Professor in the Art & Design Department at Montclair State University, will be the faculty for this course.
Previously, she has taken students to Tokyo, London, Paris, Antwerp, and Italy. Her research interests include the geography of
fashion, or the process of fashion change in relation to local culture.

All students register for the following: ARTX 345: Fashion Study Abroad: 3sh
The course will meet for seminars in Montclair prior to the trip as preparation for the site visits in Paris. Students will read texts
providing background on the characteristics of environments fostering fashion change, scholarship on French design identity, and
French retail environments. Some readings will be in preparation for museum visits and tours. Students will serve as daily guide
assistants to the professor to develop leadership in new environments and to understand travel processes. Quizzes on the designers,
heritage brands, urban districts and fashionable spaces will take place before travel during the seminar classroom periods. After the
field experience in Paris, each student is required to write a 5–8 page paper on the experiences. The paper will include background
research and analysis of Parisian local and French fashion within the global fashion matrix. Prerequisites: ARTX 122 and ARTX 220.
