Montclair State University’s Earth and Environmental Studies Department offers this study abroad program for students in any major, giving them the opportunity to examine the current issues, challenges and conditions of an urban environment in Southeast Asia. The first week of the course will be held online, with readings, discussions and power point lectures examining the history, culture, geography and urban conditions of Ho Chi Minh City and of Vietnam. Participants will then travel to Vietnam to undergo experiential projects working with Vietnamese students from the local university. MSU students will work in teams with students from Ho Chi Minh University of Natural Resources and Environment, looking at issues related to flooding, climate change, housing, transportation, local economy, and urban environmental problems. Participants will also meet with representatives from Vietnamese universities, governmental agencies and private companies located in Ho Chi Minh City.
Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is Vietnam at its most dizzying: a high-octane city of commerce and culture that has driven the country forward with its pulsating energy. From timeless alleys to incense-infused temples to chic designer malls and sleek 21st-century skyscrapers, the ghosts of the past live on in buildings that one generation ago witnessed a city in turmoil. Now the former Saigon’s urban collage is the seamless blending of these two worlds into one exciting mass.
Participants will also visit the Mekong Delta. The Mekong Delta is the ‘rice bowl’ of Vietnam, carpeted in green, with boats, houses and markets floating on the rivers, canals and streams that cross the landscape like arteries. The bustling commerce of its towns contrasts sharply with the languid pace of life in the countryside. Mangrove forests teem with birds and also the remains of Viet Cong bunkers, ornate Khmer pagodas and Buddhist temples.
