The Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation offers scholarships for academic exchanges between students at US and Austrian universities aiming at improving Austrian-American relations in the spirit of the Marshall Plan and to strengthen scholarly and scientific co-operations.

University of Graz has two places reserved for Montclair State students for the term beginning July 22, 2018. This scholarship will be awarded to students at Montclair State University proposing to conduct research for their bachelor, master or PhD thesis at University of Graz. Students nominated for the MPS Program are exempt from paying tuition fees at University of Graz for the period of their research. The Austrian Student Union Fee has to be paid despite being exempt from paying tuition fees.

This scholarship is to conduct research.  Recipients should not plan to enroll in classes for credit at Uni-Graz (At the suggestion of their Uni-Graz mentor, it may be possible to take or audit one class, but it is not expected or required.)

Montclair State will select TWO finalists to nominate to Uni-Graz. Final decision to award the scholarship is with Uni-Graz and the Marshall Foundation. 

 


Duration of Stay and Scholarship

  • Minimum of 3 months, maximum of 10 months
  • 4,000 - 10,000 EUR depending on duration of stay and degree level
Students will propose length of stay in Graz between 3 and 10 months, based on the requirements of their research and in consultation with their Uni-Graz mentor.
 
  • The earliest possible start date is July 22, 2018
  • The latest possible start date is 22 January, 2019

Please note that the indicated timeframes do not take travel days into account as part of the calculation.

Requirements:

Only Students currently enrolled at Montclair State University interested in conducting part of their research for their bachelor, master or PhD thesis at University of Graz are eligible candidates. Students are invited to apply if they are enrolled in a field of study at Montclair State that corresponds to one of the study fields at University of Graz which are open for Marshall Plan-applicants.

Students interested in applying must:

  • Be enrolled as full-time students at Montclair State University
  • In one of relevant FIELDS OF STUDY
  • Have an outstanding record of achievement
  • Be nominated by their home university
  • Be working on research for their thesis

Students wishing to apply for the Austrian Marshall Plan scholarship at University of Graz must be nominated by the MSU Austrian Marshall Scholarship Committee.
Upon nomination students will be contacted with further instructions on the application process. Final scholarship decisions will be made by Uni-Graz and the Marshal Foundation.

Students should work closely with their research mentor in developing their research proposal.

Application Documents:

In order to apply you must start an online application by clicking the above "Apply Now" button. You will then be asked to submit the following materials:
  • Completed and signed APPLICATION FORM
  • CV / resume (incl. publications if any) signed by applicant
  • Detailed research proposal for the intended research stay at University of Graz (hard copy and PDF-file, 2.000 - 2.500 words) Use the attached application APPLICATION RESEARCH TEMPLATE template to guide your proposal, you should include the following content:
    • Title of research project 
    • Short description of the research agenda 
    • Detailed description of the research problem including research questions 
    • General objective/goals
    • Methodology, research approach, workflow
    • Relevance, expected results and broader impact of research project
  • 2 letters of recommendation by professors at MSU, one of which must be provided by the supervisor of the thesis at Montclair State. The letters must be sent to the Office of International Engagement on letterhead in sealed envelopes to the attention of Domenica Dominguez.
  • Official transcript of records.  Upload transcripts for all institutions of higher education that you have attended.  Master's and PhD applicants must upload copies of undergraduate transcripts and bachelor's diploma.
  • Letter of supervision signed by a professor at University of Graz indicating the exact duration of stay: LETTER OF SUPERVISION FORM Please reach the Office of International Engagement and/or your MSU faculty mentor to assist you identifying an appropriate faculty mentor at Uni-Graz.
  • Passport copy
 

Application Deadline:

All materials must be uploaded and submitted to this electronic application by March 1, 2018 for research beginning after July 22, 2018.  The latest date to begin research in Graz is January 22, 2019

Review

All completed applications will be reviewed by a committee and some applicants will receive an invitation to interview.  The Committee will select two applicants to nominate to Uni-Graz.  Final decision on scholarship is made by Uni-Graz and the Marshall Foundation.

Once Accepted

An acceptance letter will be provided by the program contact person at University of Graz along with instructions concerning visa / residence permit application procedures.

Students will receive the first installment of the Marshall Plan Scholarship after presenting their visa or residence permit and the insurance policy to christa.grassauer@uni-graz.at.

Accommodations

Once granted the scholarship, students can make arrangements for their accommodation in Graz (contacts for housing arrangements: dorms in Graz , Austrian exchange service Graz).

Visa / Resident Permit
Students are required to follow the procedures as indicated by the embassies /relevant authorities and International Office of Uni Graz at all times. By not following the relevant procedures students risk their stay in Austria being an illegal one. All consequences resulting from students neglecting the relevant procedures are their own responsibility. Health Insurance
Provide a copy of sufficient health insurance coverage incl. medical evacuation and repatriation as well as sufficient liability insurance for the full duration of your stay in Graz. Please note that the health insurance must meet the requirements of the visa or residence permit (for detailed information please contact Austrian embassy)
