Program Overview
Northumbria University is an exchange program. Sending Red Hawks out on exchange is contingent upon recruiting inbound exchange students, and trading your place with theirs in an even balance. Spots are therefore very limited. This is an internal Montclair application. Even a successful application through this portal does not guarantee that we have a spot for you at your preferred exchange partner and during your preferred semester. You will only be confirmed for an exchange when you are nominated to that university by our IAI office.

Known as the capital of England's North East, Newcastle has a population of approximately 300,000.  With over 42,000 students, Newcastle is one of the UK's most popular university cities.  It has a dramatic location on the River Tyne, about 10 miles from the coast and lises at the heart of one of Britain's most beautiful and historic regions.  Voted eighth best "party city" by international travel experts, Newcastle is known for its lively, friendly atmosphere.  It is a compact city, easy to get around with its own underground metro train system.  By train, it is three hours to London, 90 minutes to Edinburgh and one hour to York.

Academic Fields of Study

Montclair State students will choose any combination of up to six classes or "modules" per semester from the Study Abroad Program.  Classes are available in all subject areas listed above.  All are offered at the Newcastle campuses.  Within each subject area a wide range of classes or modules is available.  The current list of modules normally available can be found here.  This webpage also provides a link to the University's academic programs database where descriptions of modules can be found.

In your application, you will list ten subject areas.  On arrival, the study abroad team at Northumbria will arrange a timetable based on the subjects you have chosen.  Normally students require a 3.0 cumulative GPA to be accepted.

Please note that Montclair will only be able to nominate one student per semester for the 2019-2020 Academic Year to the subject area of 'Social Sciences' (which includes the following departments: International Relations & Politics, Media & Communication, and Sociology & Criminology) due to capacity issues.  Students should be advised that a certain level of flexibility is needed as modules cannot be guaranteed and availability can change due to unforeseen issues.

Language of Instruction

All courses (except foreign language courses) are taught in English.
