Program Overview
Karl Franzens Universität Graz is an exchange program. Sending Red Hawks out on exchange is contingent upon recruiting inbound exchange students, and trading your place with theirs in an even balance. Spots are therefore very limited. This is an internal Montclair application. Even a successful application through this portal does not guarantee that we have a spot for you at your preferred exchange partner and during your preferred semester. You will only be confirmed for an exchange when you are nominated to that university by our IAI office.

From the Uni-Graz website:
The University of Graz is one of the largest institutions of higher education in Austria. With approximately 27,000 students and 3,500 employees, it makes an essential contribution to the vibrant life of the Styrian capital. Diversity and a wide scope characterize the education programs at the six faculties. Students can choose from more than 100 bachelor, masters and diploma programs.

  1. German Language Courses (included in transcript): at a reduced fee of € 160 exchange students can participate in 3-week German Intensive Courses at all levels in September/February; 60 hours total equaling 6 ECTS credits.

  1. Language of Subject Courses: Most courses are taught in German and the online course guide is published each July for the following academic year. A selection of courses at various departments is also taught in English
  1. Language requirement: The equivalent of two years of college German (German level B2) is desirable, if students want to follow courses in German. Students with no German proficiency can be accepted, if they find enough courses taught in English to meet their home university’s credit requirements. Accommodation and Meals

Students will live in a student apartment within the city of Graz.   Housing is arranged through an independent agency, Austrian Exchange Service (ÖAD). International students are usually accommodated in dorms, in shared flats together with other students, or in inexpensive apartments. If preferred, a homestay with an Austrian  family may be arranged.
Sign up for the buddy program!

Signing up for the buddy program is a unique and guided way of stepping into student life in Graz.  Please be aware that these students are unpaid volunteers and may not be available 24/7.  You should keep your buddy informed of arrival information in Graz as well when you do not require certain services (e.g., pick-up from the airport or train station, etc).

The Welcome Events

These events are MANDATORY for all students as they provide support with important first steps.  The sessions are NOT walk-in sessions.  Students not participating in the Welcome Events will have to take care of the necessary procedures by themselves, risk not being able to sign up for classes within the relevant timeframe and are responsible for all other consequences of them missing the Welcome Sessions.

Visa / Resident Permit

Students are required to follow the procedures as indicated by the embassies /relevant authorities and International Office of Uni Graz at all times. By not following the relevant procedures students risk their stay in Austria being an illegal one. All consequences resulting from students neglecting the relevant procedures are their own responsibility.
Estimated Program Costs

Through the exchange agreement, MSU students who are accepted to study at Uni-Graz will pay MSU tuition and fees to MSU directly while attending the program at Uni-Graz.  Additional costs to the student include room, board, insurance, airfare and other transportation, and incidentals.  Students will also pay the study abroad application fee of $400.
